Focus
The Observatory's primary focus and field of interest for research and reporting activities is the Pittsburgh region's seven-county metropolitan area: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington, and Westmoreland.
Methodology Arts and culture organizational data will be collected across a wide variety of categories, including but not limited to:
- Operations
- Endowments
- Facilities
- Fundraising
- Governance
In addition to gathering more detailed data from across a broader spectrum of institutions than any discipline-based service organization or private research group has to date, the Observatory collects data on related industries, including the film industry, commercial live-entertainment venues and leisure attractions (e.g., amusement parks, festivals, sporting events, etc.).
The Observatory also researchs, examines and reports on the external environmental forces (cultural/social, economic, educational, political, and technological) impacting or being impacted by the arts, culture and heritage institutions in the region. The Observatory will utilize the resources of its peer agencies in the region, including the Carnegie Mellon's Center for Economic Development and the Center for Arts in Society, in researching external environmental data.
